Every fall, color shifts. The brightness of summer, the sun-kissed highlights, the lightened ends, the icy blondes, gives way to something richer, deeper, and more intentional. This year, that shift is more deliberate than ever.
Fall and winter 2026 are defined by color with presence. Depth, dimension, shine, and warmth. Here’s what we’re seeing, what we’re booking, and what we think the most sophisticated hair looks like heading into the new season.
Rich, Dimensional Brunette Is Still Leading
If you followed hair trends through summer, you already know the expensive brunette movement has been building all year. Fall is its peak moment, and it’s not slowing down heading into winter.
What makes it compelling isn’t the depth alone. It’s the combination of depth, dimension, and finish that makes brunette hair look extraordinary rather than flat. The tones we’re booking most right now:
- Espresso, deep, dark, dramatic, with cool blue-black undertones
- Chestnut, warm, rich, with natural-looking golden depth
- Dark chocolate, glossy, polished, cool-leaning
- Mocha, balanced warmth, wearable across a wide range of skin tones
None of these should read as flat. The dimension is what separates a luxury result from a one-note single process. Subtle placement, a few strategic shades lighter through the mid-lengths, a warm face-framing piece, a root shadow that grows beautifully, is what creates movement and that sense that the color is lit from within.
If you’re a natural brunette who hasn’t refreshed your color since summer, fall is the most natural moment to deepen, refine, and add back the richness the season calls for.
Warm Copper and Auburn Are Having a Moment
Beyond brunette, copper, auburn, and red-adjacent tones are one of the strongest color stories of the season. Not the flat, high-maintenance reds of previous years, these are warm, dimensional, and designed to look natural.
The most wearable approach is a brunette base with copper or auburn dimension worked through the mid-lengths and ends. The result reads warm and interesting without the full commitment of an all-over red. For guests with warm or olive skin tones, this direction can be extraordinarily flattering.
The key is placement and tone selection, your colorist needs to assess your natural undertones before selecting a copper formula, because the wrong tone for your skin can read harsh rather than luminous. A consultation before committing to this direction is always worth it.
The Gloss Is the Most Underrated Service of the Season
If there’s one service that defines the fall color aesthetic more than any single technique, it’s the gloss. A professional gloss, applied in 20 to 30 minutes over existing color, seals the cuticle, refines the tone, and adds a mirror-like shine that changes how color reads entirely.
For fall specifically, the gloss does several things at once:
- Neutralizes any remaining brassiness from summer sun exposure
- Deepens and saturates tone without lifting or processing
- Adds the high-gloss finish that defines the expensive brunette and glass hair aesthetics
- Smooths the cuticle after months of heat and UV damage
Many guests are adding a standalone gloss appointment every six to eight weeks between major color services. It’s one of the most effective ways to maintain a polished, intentional result without the time or investment of a full color appointment every month.
If your color has looked flat or dull since summer and you haven’t had a gloss, that’s likely the missing piece.
What’s Moving Out
Equally important as knowing what’s trending is recognizing what’s stepping back this season. A few directions we’re seeing less of heading into fall:
- Platinum and icy blonde, extremely light, cool blondes peaked through summer. Fall is seeing a shift toward warmer, dimensional blonde for guests who want to stay light.
- High-contrast highlights, the very chunky, high-contrast foil look has given way to seamless, blended dimension. If your highlights look striped rather than natural, fall is a good moment to soften and blend.
- Flat, single-process color, one-note color without dimension or movement reads dated next to the multi-tonal, gloss-finished looks that are defining this season.
What to Ask For at Your Appointment
Knowing the trends and translating them into a specific ask for your colorist are two different things. A few phrases and reference points that help:
- “I want to go richer and deeper, but keep dimension, not flat.”
- “I’m interested in expensive brunette. Can you show me where my undertones land before we choose a formula?”
- “Can we add a gloss at the end of this appointment to finish the result?”
- “I’ve been platinum/icy for the summer, I want to transition to something warmer for fall without going too dark too fast.”
A great colorist will listen to these directional phrases, look at your hair and skin together, and translate your vision into a formula and technique specific to you. If you’re not sure what direction you want, a consultation is the right starting point, it costs nothing and clarifies everything.
